The castle is unassumingly located right in the center of town. Look, there's an antique store and then BAM - a famous castle!
When I walked into the entrance it smelled of sweet alyssum and orange blossoms. The tour inside the castle did not take very long and it was the outside I was most interested in. I did learn that this is the only castle in France with a throne room that contains the original furniture.
I toured the rooms, listening to some of the history at the same time. My favorite was the long hall.
Carvings of the salamander abounded, just as they had in Chambord, a trademark of François the First.
This is my age now:
The outside grounds did not disappoint, and I took my time walking through them. It was lovely, peaceful, and not crowded at all.
After the castle, Corinne took me into town where they had a carousel and some shops.
She lives in a nearby town called Saint Fargeau, which is tucked away in the countryside and she said that many famous people live in this quaint, secluded and private area since many people do not know about it. Driving through I felt as if I were in New Hampshire or Lake Arrowhead. Many of the homes overlooked the lake.
Here is my dream country cottage. I can picture myself writing here.
Next we headed to her house. Look Dad! She has ping pong! And a pool table. You would move right in.
I ended the night back in Paris having dinner at the oldest vegetarian restaurant in the city. It was so delicious. And I tricked two of my friends into going with me and eating vegetarian!
It was a great day. All day I also thought about one year ago when I was here. It seems like only yesterday that I walked through the gardens of Giverny on May 23, 2011. It was a day I will never forget.
If I had to choose to live either in Fontainebleau or Giverny I would pick Giverny. I know I usually want the big house and
the big grounds and the fancy schmancy and I did love the grand hall and
ballroom at the castle, but Giverny is more my style and felt like home. It was old and eclectic and had small
rooms and a great wood staircase and the best view you could desire. It is no wonder Monet was inspired to
paint there. I could write there
all day long.
My favorite room in his house was his studio. It was off to the side of the house and
the room was large and full of things and you had to step down a few stairs to
get to it. Thus, the windows were
low and you felt at one with the trees and flowers just outside. I took a couple of bootleg pictures.
Upstairs in his bedroom and I pictured waking up in there, rising to that wonderful view.
After spending lots of time at his house, I still had some left before heading for the train, so I walked the street of the small town.
Of course the highlight was walking into an art studio, and having the photographer ask me if he could photograph me in the poppy fields and then he hung me in his gallery a week later for sale!! We are still friends to this day and he just got married a couple of weeks ago.
I ended the night with Samir taking me to see Minuit a Paris - one of the best movies ever made. I think about it whenever I walk the streets here, and of course whenever it is midnight in Paris.
